About the course
Long Reef Golf Club occupies the Long Reef headland at Collaroy on Sydney's Northern Beaches, about 20 kilometres from the CBD, with ocean views from every tee and green. The headland was Salvation Army farmland until 1912, when it became Crown land managed by Warringah Shire Council. Golf began in 1921 on a nine-hole course on the higher ground, the swamp below was drained in the late 1920s, and the course reached 18 holes in 1931. During the Second World War the army used much of the course as an artillery range, and sand from flattened dunes later spread across the southern holes. Eric Apperly redesigned the course in 1946, and in 1965 Al Howard designed what are now the 1st and 2nd holes on newly acquired land.
The course is a links with kikuyu fairways and Poa annua greens, and drains well after rain. Men's par is 71 (scratch rating 73 from the black tees) across four sets of tees, and women's par is 73 from two sets. Wind is the main challenge.
- 10th: a 217-metre par 3 played uphill, usually into the wind.
- 13th: a 138-metre par 3, often called the signature hole, with out of bounds left and the ocean close by.
- 16th: a 415-metre par 4 with the Tasman Sea and out of bounds just left of the fairway.
The course is open to the public seven days a week, and tee times are booked online. Fees change with the day and time: 18 holes costs $87 Monday to Thursday, $98 on Fridays and $105 at weekends and on public holidays, with cheaper twilight rates from 3pm. Carts and hire sets can be added when booking. Collared shirts must be tucked in, and public players may wear clean sneakers.
The pro shop offers lessons and clinics, and a practice range sits beside the 18th. The clubhouse cafe overlooks Fisherman's Beach and serves breakfast and lunch daily and dinner on Fridays, and advance bookings are needed.
