About the course
Elanora Country Club sits high in bushland at Elanora Heights on Sydney's Northern Beaches, roughly halfway between the CBD and Palm Beach, with Ku-ring-gai Chase and Garigal National Parks next door. The club was formed on 19 October 1928, led by its founder Brigadier T. A. (John) Playfair as part of a planned residential estate. The first nine holes opened on 29 May 1929, the second nine followed in 1930, and the present clubhouse opened on 7 May 1938. Elanora is an Aboriginal word meaning "home by the sea".
The course was rebuilt in 2004 and plays to par 72, with couch fairways and large, rolling greens. It measures 6264 metres from the black tees down to 5562 metres from the yellow, with further tees at 5560, 5322 and 5145 metres. Water is part of the design: an 86-megalitre dam was built in 2000, and wetlands beside the 5th and 14th were added in the reconstruction.
- 5th: a 145-metre par 3 with water wrapping around most of the right side of the green.
- 16th: a straight 524-metre par 5 aimed at the house on the hill, to a green up to three clubs deep.
- 17th: a 122-metre par 3 that changes character with the wind.
Elanora is a private members' club, and guests play only with a member. Reciprocal, interstate and overseas visitors book by email or the online enquiry form (phone bookings are not taken), and every player needs a letter of introduction from their home club dated no more than three months before play. Golf shoes with soft spikes are required.
The Sports Shop handles bookings, apparel and lessons. The halfway Terrace serves breakfast from 7am to 11am and lunch from 11.30am to 3pm, Tuesday to Sunday. The club also has an eight-room Lodge for overnight stays, two bowls greens, four tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a bridge program.
