About the course
Mona Vale Golf Club lies between Mona Vale and the Warriewood headland on Sydney's Northern Beaches, with views from the ocean to the bushland. Golf on the site goes back to about 1920, when a Scot named McFarlane laid out a rough three-hole course. Members later built a nine-hole course on Kitchener Park, and the club was formally constituted in October 1927. Military use during the Second World War closed the course until 1947. Extra land was leased in 1956, and the 18-hole course was officially opened in August 1960. The clubhouse, rebuilt after a 1961 fire, has recently been renovated.
The course is a par 72, described by the club as a Group 1 championship layout. The first ten holes run through tree-lined parkland, while the last eight have wider fairways and are exposed to the coastal breeze.
Mona Vale is a public-access course: anyone can play by registering free online as a public member and booking a tee time, or by contacting the pro shop. Midweek green fees are $85 for 18 holes and $60 for ten, with weekends and public holidays at $95 and $65. Twilight golf, after 2:30pm (3:30pm in daylight saving), is $50 for unlimited holes, seven days. Electric carts with GPS are $60 for 18 holes and $40 for ten, and club hire with a pull buggy is available. Competitions have priority at set times:
- Tuesday: an open medley competition from 7am to 12pm for anyone with a GA handicap.
- Wednesday and Saturday: member competitions until 3:30pm, with social play afterwards.
- Thursday: women members' competition until 12pm.
Practice facilities include two putting greens, two chipping greens with bunkers, nets and a full-length teaching area, and PGA professionals give lessons seven days by appointment. The clubhouse eatery opens daily from 6:30am to 3pm, with dinners Thursday to Sunday, and The Mona Social bar and bistro occupies the upper level.
