About the course
Monash Country Club sits high in the hills above Narrabeen on Sydney's Northern Beaches, about 21 kilometres from the Sydney GPO, with views towards the Pacific Ocean. The club began in 1931 as the Monash Social Golf Club, named after Lieutenant General Sir John Monash and formed by Jewish golfers who at the time faced restrictions joining many established clubs. It played at courses around Sydney until the Second World War. Afterwards, members set out to build a course where membership would never depend on race, creed, colour or religion. Monash Holdings Limited, funded by shares sold within Sydney's Jewish community, secured land at Elanora Heights, and the first nine holes opened in 1950.
Monash was later raised to Group One status. It hosted the Australian PGA Championship in 1964 and 1984, when Greg Norman won, and it is the home club of Cameron Davis, winner of the 2017 Australian Open. In 2025 it hosted the Australian Senior Amateur Championship. The par 72 course is set in natural bushland, and recent work includes an irrigation upgrade, a redesign of the 17th and 18th holes by James Wilcher, and improvements to greens and bunkers.
Monash is a private club and does not publish visitor green fees. Members may bring guests, and the club hosts corporate golf days on Mondays and Thursdays; some open events, such as its seniors' order of merit day, have taken visitor entries from golfers with a qualifying handicap. Dress rules apply on the course and practice areas, including tucked-in collared shirts and no denim.
Practice facilities include a 250-metre driving range with 16 targets, a turf hitting area and undercover bays, a 40-metre short-game area with three bunkers, a putting green and nets. The Monash Golf Academy offers lessons seven days, including TrackMan sessions in an indoor studio. The clubhouse has bars and a cafe open every day, plus a halfway bar.
