About the course
Avondale Golf Club is a private members' club in Pymble on Sydney's Upper North Shore, within walking distance of Pymble station but surrounded by bush, with no roads on its boundaries. It was formed in 1926 by a group of businessmen who bought more than 200 acres of rugged bushland beside Presbyterian Ladies College. The first nine holes opened in April 1927, and the course was laid out by architect and course designer Eric Apperly, who also drew plans for the clubhouse. The original clubhouse building still stands. Fairways were cut through the bush along sandstone ridges and across gullies, and in 2001 Avondale became the first club in New South Wales to be certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
The 18-hole course is par 71 and measures 6,110 metres from the championship tees. It has since been refreshed by Ross Watson and more recently by Neil Crafter of Crafter + Mogford. The fairways are Santa Ana couch and the greens were refurbished with bentgrass in 2017.
- 3rd: a 549-metre par 5 from the blue tees, where everything feeds left, played to a long multi-level green.
- 16th: a 437-metre par 4 to a narrowing fairway, with the left side of the green falling away.
- 18th: a 398-metre par 4, index 1, needing a drive of about 230 metres to see a two-tier green guarded by deep bunkers.
Avondale is not open to the public. Play is limited to members' guests, reciprocal club members and corporate days. Interstate and overseas golfers can email the golf operations team to ask about availability and pricing; a letter of introduction addressed to the General Manager may be requested, all requests need Club approval, and availability is generally midweek, including Wednesdays. A strict dress code applies on the course, in the clubhouse and in the car park.
The pro shop opens seven days, stocks equipment and apparel, and offers club fitting and repairs.
