About the course

Killara Golf Club sits on the Pacific Highway at Killara on Sydney's upper North Shore, about 14 kilometres from the city. It began in September 1899 as the Lindfield Golf and Recreation Club, with nine holes cleared in Archbold's Paddock. Without a long-term lease, the club moved after James George Edwards and F. B. Gaden arranged a mortgage to buy the 36-acre Home Paddock, making Killara the first golf club in Australia to own its land. Further purchases in 1906, 1911 and 1923 took it to 18 holes on 50.5 hectares. The clubhouse burned down in 1932 and its art deco replacement opened in 1933.

The course spreads across three paddocks (Home, Farm and Bradfield), with tree-lined, undulating fairways, water features and views to the Blue Mountains. Course architect Harley Kruse renovated the course, rebuilding bunkers, tees and greens and reversing the direction of some holes.

  • 1st: a 513-metre par 5 played from high tees to a wide fairway without bunkers.
  • 8th: a 198-metre par 3 from elevated tees over the irrigation lake.
  • 18th: a 353-metre par 4 with an uphill second to a raised, mostly blind green below the clubhouse.

Killara is a private club. Golf is open to members' guests and to members of reciprocal clubs, who book through the online enquiry form with letters of introduction, no more than two months ahead. Reciprocal times are offered on Sunday, Monday, Thursday (when no corporate day is booked) and Friday; on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday times are released only three days before, with no guests. Carts cost $44 and hire clubs $75. Shirts must be collared and tucked in, and denim and tracksuits are not allowed anywhere on the property.

PGA professionals offer lessons, indoor Trackman analysis and club fitting. The clubhouse overlooks the 1st tee and 18th green, and the club also offers bowls, tennis, squash, bridge and snooker.
