About the course

Pymble Golf Club is on Cowan Road in St Ives, on Sydney's upper North Shore, about 25 minutes by road from the CBD. Golf was first played on the site between 1920 and 1924, on dairy grazing land known as Brown's Orchard. A company formed in 1924 took over about 90 acres for an 18-hole course planned by Dan Soutar and Carnegie Clark, and the club was officially opened on 20 February 1926, with all 18 holes in play from 31 March 1928. The later purchase of Britton's Orchard allowed a new Eric Apperly layout, adopted in 1949 and finished in 1953. Kel Nagle, winner of the 1960 Centenary Open, was the club professional for five years from 1951.

The course is parkland, lined with tall blue gums and broken up by dams and gardens. Golf NSW lists it as par 72 for men. A three-year project by course architect James Wilcher rebuilt and standardised every green, tee and bunker, and was finished at the start of 2024, ahead of the centenary. Features of the new design include:

  • 2nd: a green with a pronounced hump.
  • 4th: a hole with no bunkers at all.
  • 11th: a short par 3 with a new forced carry over water.
  • 16th: a strong par 4, long regarded as the signature hole.

The 8th and 14th share one large green, and the 10th and 12th share a single large bunker.

Pymble is a private members' club with a membership waitlist and competitions every day. Visitor green fees are not published online, and corporate golf days are run for groups of 52 to 150. The dress code requires collared shirts tucked in, tailored shorts and golf shoes, and rules out denim and cargo styles.

The pro shop offers lessons, and the club runs cadet and clinic programs. The clubhouse has an upper verandah, a lower deck, a members' bar, dining and function rooms for up to 120 guests.
