About the course
Barnwell Park Golf Club is a member-owned club on the shore of Hen and Chicken Bay, part of Canada Bay, in Five Dock in Sydney's inner west. In the 1930s the site was mangrove swamp and a council tip. It was filled, and in 1942 the reserve was named Barnwell Park after the family of Alderman W.T. Barnwell, who donated land. Drummoyne Council built the first nine holes and a small brick pro shop in 1964, and the club ran its first competitions that December with Erik Royds, then 22, as its first PGA professional. The club incorporated in 1968, and its clubhouse and the second nine holes were both completed in 1974.
The 18-hole course is par 61, a short and walkable layout on flat reclaimed land with views over the bay. The same ground also has a nine-hole disc golf and FootGolf layout.
Bookings for social golf are open to the public seven days a week, either online through the pro shop's booking page or by phoning the pro shop on 0433 970 499. Green fees are $30 for 18 holes and $24 for nine on weekdays, and $36.50 for 18 holes and $29 for nine on weekends. The club has the course to itself for competitions on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and also runs competitions on Monday, Wednesday (women), Thursday (veterans, no handicap needed for over-50s) and Friday. Visitors with an official handicap can play in competitions and win the day's prizes, but not member trophies or monthly medals. Carts can be hired.
The pro shop, run by Elite Golf, offers PGA coaching, junior and women's clinics, club fitting and repairs. Stone Restaurant in the clubhouse serves lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday.
