About the course
Bonnie Doon Golf Club is at Pagewood in Sydney's eastern suburbs, within 8 kilometres of the CBD and a few minutes from Sydney Airport. The club began in 1897 as Marrickville Golf Club and describes itself as the third-oldest club in Sydney. Its first course had 12 holes at Tempe. In 1907 it moved to an 18-hole course at Arncliffe, on a grazing property called Bonnie Doon that gave the club its new name. After the Second World War the expansion of Mascot aerodrome took in 13 of those holes, and in 1947 the club moved to Pagewood by taking over the New Metropolitan Golf Club.
The course is an 18-hole par 71 on sandy heathland, redesigned by Ogilvy, Clayton, Cocking and Mead. It is fully sand-based, so it stays dry after heavy rain, with irregular undulations, wispy rough and rugged bunker edges. The published hole lengths add up to 5,964 metres from the black tees.
- 7th: a 467-metre par 5 with out of bounds left and a narrow, bunkered entrance to the green.
- 14th: the longest hole, a 505-metre par 5 with waste areas running down the left.
- 15th: a 120-metre par 3 to a three-tier green.
- 18th: a 417-metre par 4 with a bunker 70 metres short of the green.
Bonnie Doon is a private members' club. It does not publish visitor green fees or a public booking page, its practice facilities are for members and their guests, and corporate and charity golf days are arranged by enquiry through golf@bdgc.com.au or (02) 9349 2101.
Facilities include a full-length driving range, a short-game area with a 65-metre green complex and five bunkers, and a golf shop with GPS-equipped carts, pull carts, hire sets, club repairs, a Trackman simulator and lessons with PGA coaches.
