About the course
The Lakes Golf Club is a private club in Eastlakes, set in the Botany Wetlands about 15 minutes from the Sydney CBD and 10 minutes from the airport. It was founded in 1928 on sandhills beside a lake that once formed part of Sydney's water supply, with a course laid out by Eric Apperly and Tom Howard; the club also had to build the neighbouring public Eastlake course at the same time. The freeway between the airport and the city cut through the course in 1968, leading to a redesign by Von Hagge, Bruce Devlin's design partner, and in 2007 Ogilvy Clayton Design carried out a major rebuild. The Lakes has hosted the Australian Open in 1964, 1980, 1992, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2018, and co-hosted it in 2023.
The par 72 course (slope 143 from the black tees) is played on a sand base among rolling dunes, with coastal wind, 97 bunkers, sandy waste areas and water. Seven front-nine holes sit on the far side of the freeway.
- 1st: a 365-metre par 4 where the drive must carry some part of a diagonal lake.
- 10th: a 314-metre par 4 with a daunting tee shot and bunkers across the front of the green.
- 14th: a 502-metre par 5 to the largest green on the course, which runs right down to the lake.
- 18th: an unusual finish, a 191-metre par 3.
Visitors not accompanied by a member can play on limited days, generally Mondays and Thursdays, with some afternoon times on other days except Saturdays from October to March. Requests are made through the club's tee time enquiry form. Green fees are $450 for 18 holes and $300 for nine for members of Australian golf clubs, and $750 and $450 for international visitors and other non-members.
The golf shop is staffed seven days, and the golf academy teaches visitors as well as members, with Trackman hitting bays and a putting studio. Non-members having a lesson can use the practice areas for 30 minutes before and after it. Members also have a 280-metre driving range and a short game area.
