About the course
The Australian Golf Club is a private members' club at Rosebery, about 6 kilometres from the centre of Sydney. Founded in 1882, it describes itself as the oldest golf club in the Commonwealth, and it staged the first Australian Open in 1904. By 2019 it had hosted the national championship 21 times.
The 18-hole course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, renovated in 2013. Since then it has hosted the men's Australian Open in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2023, and the women's Australian Open in 2023. The club renovates its surfaces on a set calendar: fairways in mid-January and mid-September, and greens in late March and early September, with turf taking from about ten days to four weeks to recover.
Play is for members and their guests. Interstate and international golfers can ask for a tee time through the club's online enquiry form, which needs a letter of introduction from the general manager or head professional of each player's home club, along with handicap details. The interstate and international guest green fee is $800 per player, and the club asks for up to 72 hours to reply. Members of reciprocal clubs use a separate request form. Hire clubs and shoes can be requested. Each year the club also runs open events such as The Australian Medal, the women's AGC Medal and The Australian Senior Medal, with entries through MiTournament.
Lessons with the club's teaching professionals are held on the Northern Driving Range, the practice putting green and the chipping green. The Niblick Cafe serves players at the turn.
