About the course

Bowral Golf Club was established in 1901 and sits on Kangaloon Road, a few minutes from the Bowral town centre in the Southern Highlands. Members first played on a private nine-hole course, then on land now partly occupied by Bradman Oval, and later on a nine-hole sand-green course on the Merilbah Estate. In 1917 the club bought 36 acres on Kangaloon Road, where a clubhouse was finished in June 1919 and professional Dan Soutar laid out nine holes. More land in 1920 allowed an extension to 18 holes designed by Carnegie Clark, and the 15th was added on land bought in 1950. Hastings Clark served as club professional for 48 years, from 1934 to 1982. The course was fully irrigated in 2001, the club's centenary year.

The par 69 parkland layout has tree-lined fairways and an out-and-back routing, and each hole has a name.

  • 1st, The Bridge: a par 4 where a 230-metre carry clears the creek, crossed later by a stone bridge modelled on St Andrews.
  • 4th, The Gum: stroke index 1, a long dogleg right with out of bounds along the right and a large gum guarding the green.
  • 14th, Lake Kateker: a par 4 with a tee shot over the club's lake.
  • 16th, The Gauntlet: an uphill par 3 of close to 200 metres.
  • 18th, Clubhouse: a par 4 with water to consider off the tee and a green below the historic clubhouse.

Visitors are welcome, and players from affiliated clubs can enter competitions. Tee times are best booked online, where 18 holes cost $44 on weekdays and $54 at weekends, with a 12-hole option at $31 on weekdays; twilight is $22 for unlimited holes. The club has 18 lithium carts with GPS, plus club and pull buggy hire, and walking is welcome. A neat casual dress code applies, with collared shirts and golf shoes.

The pro shop has four PGA professionals and is open seven days, with lessons from coaches including Elle Sandak and Kon Fondas.
