About the course
Brighton Lakes Recreation & Golf Club lies beside the Georges River at Moorebank in south-western Sydney, but its story starts near Sydney Airport. In the late 1920s golfers formed North Brighton Golf Club across the Cooks River from the airport, using a tin shed as a clubhouse. Runway extensions after the Second World War forced a move, and in 1950 the club resettled at Milperra as New Brighton Golf Club. Part of that course was resumed in 1979 for the M5 Motorway, and in 2015 six holes and a practice fairway were lost to the Brighton Lakes housing estate. The club rebuilt on land from the old Greenwood course across the M5, with architect Bob Harrison designing seven new holes and reworking four others, and reopened as an 18-hole facility with a new clubhouse in August 2019.
The course has six par 3s, with creeks and lakes in play on many holes. Notable holes include:
- 7th: a dogleg par 5 where players choose between carrying the water or playing safe to the right.
- 12th and 13th: survivors from the New Brighton layout, a short par 4 to a sloping tabletop green and a double-dogleg par 5.
- 18th: a par 3 alongside a large lake, finishing in front of the clubhouse balcony.
Public play is allowed seven days from 6.30am outside competition times. Green fees are $50 for 18 holes and $35 for nine on weekdays, and $60 and $45 on weekends and public holidays, with a $30 weekday twilight nine. Open competitions run on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings. The club has 60 GPS-equipped electric carts ($45 for 18 holes on weekdays) and hire clubs.
The pro shop, led by PGA professional Kurt Stegbauer, opens 6am to dusk and offers public lessons, custom fitting and repairs, and there is a short game area near the clubhouse. The Pavilion Restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily, and the Sweet Spot Cafe is also on site.
