About the course
Charlestown Golf Club is at Hillsborough in Lake Macquarie, about two hours' drive north of Sydney, with the course set in bushland. Efforts to establish a course began in July 1966, and the club was formally founded on 18 October 1971 at a meeting at the Charlestown Community Centre attended by 200 to 250 people. Its first clubhouse was a small weatherboard cottage. The club was named the 2023 Golf NSW Country Club of the Year.
The 18-hole course plays to par 72 and measures 6,191 metres from the blue tees, with white and red tees for shorter rounds. Holes worth knowing (blue tees):
- 11th: a 414-metre par 4, stroke index 2.
- 12th: the longest par 3, at 205 metres.
- 15th: a 536-metre par 5, the longest hole on the course.
- 17th: a 401-metre par 4 and the stroke index 1.
- 18th: a 525-metre par 5 finishing below the clubhouse deck.
Social golf is available all day Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 2.30pm Tuesday, 11am Thursday, 3.30pm Saturday and 11.30am Sunday. The green fee is $45 whether you play nine or 18 holes, with twilight rates of $25 and $30. Carts cost $32 for nine holes and $47 for 18 and need a full driver licence, club hire is $25, and the competition fee is $42. Tee times are booked online. Dress should be neat, with soft spikes or suitable sports shoes; workwear, thongs and ripped clothing are not allowed.
The club has a driving range with free Toptracer technology, where buckets cost $10 for 30 balls up to $25 for 100. It opens from 8.30am, or 11am on Mondays, and no booking is needed. There are also short-game practice areas. The clubhouse opens from 9am daily and closes at 7.30pm Sunday to Tuesday and 9.30pm Wednesday to Saturday. The bar and restaurant overlook several fairways, with outdoor dining on a deck above the 18th green, and the bistro opens seven days.
