About the course
Merewether Golf Club was established in 1933 and sits at Adamstown in Newcastle, minutes from the city centre and beaches. The club is in the middle of a major redevelopment, approved by members, that will deliver a new clubhouse with an attached seniors living precinct, along with a course masterplan to guide changes to the layout. The course stays open during construction, and the club is trading from temporary facilities.
The 18 holes are tree-lined, with strategic bunkering and a mix of short and long holes. Several holes are temporary while works continue (the 1st, 4th and 10th, and the 18th green), so the current layout is shorter than usual. The prevailing north-easterly makes some holes play longer. Holes worth knowing:
- 3rd: a 390-metre par 4, the stroke index 1, with an uphill second shot.
- 6th: a 146-metre par 3 to a long, narrow green, often into the north-easterly.
- 11th: a 273-metre par 4 whose second shot must carry a large dam.
- 16th: the signature hole, a 373-metre uphill par 4 bending slightly left.
- 17th: a 192-metre downhill par 3 over water.
Visitors are welcome at set times around competitions: all day Monday and Friday, from 10.30am Tuesday, 10am Wednesday and Sunday, 1pm Thursday and 3pm Saturday. Social bookings are online only. From Monday to Thursday visitors pay $50 for 18 holes and $38 for nine; Friday to Sunday and public holidays it is $55 and $41. A Monday special is $33 (not in December, January or on public holidays), twilight after 4pm is $30, and carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $35 for nine. Visitors need a Golf Australia handicap to play in competitions.
During the redevelopment, practice is limited to a putting and short-game green and practice nets, and a food and coffee truck operates on site. The pro shop, led by head professional Peter Johnston with two other PGA professionals, offers lessons, club fitting and repairs.
