About the course

Waratah Golf Club was formed in 1901 and was the first golf club in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region, as well as a founding club of the Newcastle District Golf Association. It started out affiliated with a tennis club, became independent in 1905 with a small clubhouse at Dangar Park, and opened a course at Kerr Street in 1911. When BHP bought that land in 1920, the club purchased 104 acres near Cockle Creek railway station, and the new course and clubhouse opened in December 1921. Tom Heard was appointed the first professional that year. The club's address today is 456 Lake Road, Argenton.

The 18-hole course is par 71, made up of six par 3s, seven par 4s and five par 5s. Works under a 2007 master plan added new tees on the 2nd and 4th and a new 1st green. The club runs the W.E. Alexander Open, a Vardon event, and hosted the golf for the 2014 International Children's Games.

Visitors book public tee times online. Social green fees for visitors are $44 on Monday and Tuesday and $55 from Wednesday to Sunday, with later rates of $35 after 2pm and $25 after 4pm. Visitor competition fees range from $37 on Thursday to $45 on Saturday. A cart costs visitors $55, and online two-player packages including a cart are $135 on Monday and Tuesday and $145 for the rest of the week. Visiting juniors pay $15 if they belong to another club and $22 if not. Cart drivers must be over 18 with a current licence, and carts take two players. The dress code is described as relaxed but respectful, on the course and in the clubhouse.

The pro shop sells equipment and clothing and takes lesson bookings, and the club runs junior programs and a Ladies Get Into Golf program. The Chip-In Cafe serves food, and the clubhouse hosts functions.
