About the course

Shortland Waters Golf Club is off Vale Street at Shortland in Newcastle. The 18-hole course is par 71 over 5,871 metres, with four par 5s, nine par 4s and five par 3s. A redevelopment added eight newly designed holes, six of them built in a links style.

  • 1st: a par 5 with a tree-lined tee shot, out of bounds close on the right and a fairway bunker 230 metres out on the left, then a deep bunker 50 metres short of an oval green that slopes left.
  • 18th: a 310-metre par 4 that plays longer than its length; the club's largest bunker guards the front right of the green, with a drop to a hazard beyond.

Social golf is open to everyone, individuals and groups, and social players use the yellow tees. Fees are $45 for 18 holes and $32 for 11 holes, with carts $50 for 18 holes and $38 for 11, limited to two people per cart. The cart fleet has GPS, and new cart paths allow carts year round. Bookings are made online or through the golf shop on 02 4955 8169, and visitors can enter events on the club's competition calendar. Collared shirts and tailored shorts or trousers are required; singlets, football jerseys, thongs and sandals are not allowed. The club discourages play above 38 degrees.

The golf shop is open seven days and handles club repairs, fittings and corporate days. Private lessons run Tuesday to Friday from $90 an hour, and there is a free beginners clinic. The clubhouse has a bar and the Fairway 2307 bistro, which serves lunch from 11:30am to 2:30pm and dinner from 5pm to 8:30pm, Wednesday to Sunday, with takeaway available.
