About the course
Sugar Valley Golf Club sits on Boundary Road at West Wallsend, at the foot of Mount Sugarloaf in the Lake Macquarie area. The club gives the drive as about 30 minutes from the Newcastle CBD and five minutes from the M1 and the Hunter Expressway. It began in 1936 as Macquarie Golf Club, the first golf club in the Lake Macquarie region, built its first clubhouse in 1939 and joined the Newcastle District Golf Association. After a brief closure in 1948, professional Keith Bedford redeveloped the course in the 1960s and gave it the Sugar Valley name. The Johnston family ran it from 1972 for more than 30 years. In 2005 the land was sold for a retirement estate that shares a redesigned course with the club, and Adventist Senior Living has owned it since 2023.
The course is a short nine-hole layout played twice for 18. The scorecard has seven par 3s and two par 4s, adding up to par 29 and 1,476 metres for nine holes, or par 58 and 2,930 metres for 18. The longest hole is the 280-metre par 4 1st, and the par 3s run from 100 to 191 metres, so the round is mostly a test of the short game.
Visitors of all abilities are welcome. Social golf works on an honesty system: pay at the VendiGolf tap-and-go machine outside the building and keep the receipt. Social play is available every day, starting later on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday mornings around competitions, which are held on Tuesday (veterans aged 55 and over, mixed), Thursday (women) and Saturday (mixed). There are no motorised carts for hire; pull buggies are $5, cash only. Players report to the golf shop before going out, and the dress code asks for a collared top and closed shoes with socks, with no singlets, T-shirts or football shorts.
