About the course
Duntryleague Golf Club is on Woodward Street in Orange, laid out around the Duntryleague mansion. The mansion was built from 1876 for James Dalton to plans by Benjamin Backhouse, with cast-iron lace by Fletcher Brothers of Sydney. Orange Golf Club bought the property in 1935 and formally took over the mansion in 1946 to create a residential country golf club, and the clubhouse became part of the mansion in 1955. The trees and shrubs that frame the course were planted from 1936.
The 18-hole course is par 70 and just over 6,000 metres from the blue tees, and par 72 of 5,281 metres from the red tees. It has undulating, tree-lined South African couch fairways and bentgrass greens, and rewards accurate driving. Discs mark 200, 150 and 100 metres to the centre of the green.
- 13th: a 408-metre par 4 whose fairway narrows to about 25 metres between trees.
- 15th: rated the hardest hole, a 388-metre par 4 over a gully to an L-shaped green.
- 16th: the longest hole, a 441-metre par 5 with cross bunkers and a long, narrow green.
- 17th: a 169-metre par 3 and the only water carry on the course.
Visitors book tee times online. The social green fee is $78 for 18 holes and $55 for nine every day, with juniors $25. Motorised carts cost $51 for 18 holes and $38 for nine, and pull buggies $5. Smart casual dress applies on the course and in the clubhouse, steel spikes are not allowed, and players must carry a sand bucket. Visitors from reciprocal clubs need a letter of introduction or full fees apply. A round takes about 4 hours 15 minutes.
The golf centre stocks major brands and holds demo days on the range, with PGA professionals Nathan King and Matt Barrett coaching. The mansion has 14 en suite guest rooms and two three-bedroom apartments.
