About the course
Forbes Golf Club is on Parkes Road beside the Newell Highway on the northern side of Forbes. The club was re-formed at a meeting on 20 May 1909 and opened a nine-hole links on 29 May that year, marking out a second nine in 1912. New clubhouses followed in 1915, 1934 and 1962, and in 1955 the club commissioned Al Howard, then professional at Monash, to design a new course.
The 18-hole course is par 72 and 6,100 metres from the blue tees, with slope ratings of 123 for men and 116 for women. It is built on a natural watercourse that forms part of Lake Forbes, which players cross four times in a round, and the fairways and greens are fully watered. There are four par 3s from 130 to 192 metres, ten par 4s from 311 to 411 metres and four par 5s from 419 to 493 metres, and the course hosts pro-ams.
Visitors pay $42 for 18 holes and $24 for nine, with juniors aged 16 to 18 $17, ages 11 to 15 $5 and children 10 and under free. Carts cost $50 for 18 holes and $35 for nine (hirers must be over 18), and clubs can be hired. Visitors and reciprocal members with a current Golf Australia handicap can enter competitions by giving their Golf ID when booking. Social play is open seven days, and the weekly competitions are:
- Wednesday: women's competition.
- Thursday: veterans, rotating between Forbes, Parkes, Condobolin, West Wyalong and Grenfell.
- Saturday: men's and women's competitions.
The full-length driving range is open to visitors seven days, at $10 for 50 balls. PGA professional Ellesha Michie runs the pro shop, club fitting, lessons, and junior and women's social golf programmes.
