About the course
Henbury Sport & Recreation Club is a not-for-profit club on the edge of Kandos, about three hours from Sydney, with its course backing onto the Capertee Valley and Wollemi National Park. It opened on 9 August 1931 as a nine-hole course laid out by Rupert Black, who had worked as Alister MacKenzie's draughtsman. Arthur East marked out a nine-hole extension in 1937, and grass greens replaced the sand greens in 1956. Volunteers still do the course maintenance.
The 18-hole layout is a par 70 of 5,923 metres from the men's tees and 5,197 metres from the women's. It is grass greens throughout, with native wildlife on the course.
- 3rd: a 207-metre par 3.
- 12th: the shortest hole, a 119-metre par 3.
- 15th: the longest hole, a 544-metre par 5.
Social golfers are welcome seven days a week, whatever the size of the group. The visitor fee is $25 for 18 holes and $15 for nine, with a $10 twilight rate from 4pm for as many holes as you can fit in. Bookings are taken by phone. The club has a few carts for hire with 24 hours notice. When the clubhouse is unattended, scorecards are at the 1st tee and fees go in the honesty box or the card terminal at the front entry.
The competition season runs from March to November. There is a mixed 18-hole event on Tuesdays, a nine-hole "Chicken Run" on Wednesdays all year, and men's and women's comps on Saturdays. The Henbury Open is held in October and the Veterans' Open in March.
The clubhouse has a bar and bistro and opens daily from late morning. The club also has two tennis courts, snooker and darts, and offers limited free parking for self-contained caravans overlooking the course.
