About the course

Portland Golf Club, officially the Portland Community Sports and Recreation Club, is on Wallerawang Road at the edge of Portland, about 20 minutes west of Lithgow and roughly two and a half hours' drive from Sydney. The club has recently celebrated its centenary.

The course has nine holes with sand greens, laid over undulating ground that mixes links and parkland character. There are 18 tees, plus separate women's tees, so a full round is played over two loops with different tee shots. The club regards it as a demanding test of sand-green golf, and it scheduled the 2026 Hickory Stick Golf Championship, an 18-hole event played with old hickory clubs, for May.

The club's licensed facilities are open to golfers and visitors alike, and it invites golfers curious about sand-green play to give it a try. Weekend competitions run for men and women, with the format changing each week (stableford, ambrose, worst ball and others), and the latest details are posted on the club's Facebook page. Green fees are not published online, so call (02) 6355 5208 to check fees and book.

The clubhouse has a full bar, open Thursday 5pm to 7.30pm, Friday and Saturday 5pm to 9pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm, along with snooker and a function hall seating up to 80. A Thai restaurant at the club serves dinner Thursday to Saturday from 5pm and opens from lunch on Sunday.
