About the course
Mudgee Golf Club is about two minutes from the centre of Mudgee in the Central West, roughly three and a half hours' drive west of Sydney. The club was founded in 1906, and its current layout was designed by Arthur East in 1955. It has hosted the NSW Seniors Championships three times and the men's and women's NSW Mid-Amateur Championships in 2014, and the Mudgee Open Amateur, a 36-hole Vardon event played over the October long weekend, dates from 1930.
The 18-hole parkland course covers close to 80 acres and is a par 71 of 6,051 metres from the black tees. Redbank Creek winds through the property and crosses several holes, the fairways are lined with eucalypts, elms and pines, and many of the greens slope sharply from back to front.
- 6th: at 401 metres the longest par 4, with Lake McCully behind and below the green.
- 13th: a 542-metre par 5 with out of bounds along the right.
- 17th: the Donga, a 127-metre par 3 played downhill over the creek to a green on its bank.
The course and pro shop are open seven days, usually from 8am to 5pm. Competitions run on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday and are open to visitors with a Golf Australia handicap; Tuesday is generally veterans and Wednesday ladies. Social groups are welcome every day. Current green fees are not published online with a recent date, so check with the pro shop. Carts, hand buggies and clubs can be hired.
The resident professional gives lessons and clinics, with junior coaching on most Tuesday afternoons, and there are practice areas and putting greens. The clubhouse bar opens Wednesday to Sunday, and a Chinese restaurant at the club serves lunch and dinner on the same days. Alcohol cannot be brought onto the course.
