About the course
Leura Golf Club sits on the ridges above the Jamison Valley at Sublime Point Road, about 90 minutes west of Sydney. It opened officially on 29 November 1902 with nine holes, and some of its opening fairways have been in play since then. In the 1980s a deal with developers brought the Fairmont resort, a realigned lower nine and a new clubhouse, opened in June 1988. The club remains private and member-owned, makes the course available to visitors, and partners with the neighbouring Fairmont Resort.
The course is a par 70 and short by modern standards. The early holes run through pines, eucalypts and European deciduous trees that colour up in autumn, and the back nine moves into narrow, bush-lined holes with water, out of bounds and steep slopes.
- 14th: the index 1 hole, a 371-metre par 4 along the edge of the Jamison Valley, with out of bounds on the right.
- 16th: a 500-metre par 5 that doglegs right past two large water hazards to a green on a hill.
- 17th: the hardest par 3, about 171 metres across a gully to an elevated green with water on the left.
Visitor rounds are 18 or 11 holes. Weekday fees are $48 for 18 holes and $37 for 11, rising to $60 and $48 on weekends and public holidays, and Fairmont guests pay less. Book online or through the pro shop on +61 2 4710 9784. Motorised carts are $48 for 18 holes (drivers must be 18 or over), pull buggies $6 and hire clubs $30. Competitions run on Tuesdays (women) and on Wednesdays and Saturdays (medley), and visitors can enter for $60 including the competition fee.
Practice facilities include a putting green in front of the pro shop, a chipping green near the 1st tee, practice nets and practice mats. The clubhouse bar and restaurant overlook the 18th and trade Wednesday to Sunday.
