About the course
Manly Golf Club was founded in 1903 and plays at Balgowlah, a few blocks from Manly's beaches. It grew from three holes laid out near Fairlight in 1901 by the Woods brothers, and women were admitted to playing membership in 1906. The first course on the present site opened in May 1908. The clubhouse, designed by member architects Eric Apperly and Arthur Wright, opened in November 1924 and still forms the core of today's building.
The course has hosted championships: Jack Nicklaus set the course record of 62 at the 1971 NSW Open, and Greg Norman shot 64 in 1978. A full redevelopment to a masterplan by Thomson Perrett opened in July 2012. The 18-hole, par 71 layout has four par 3s, a double green shared by the 1st and 17th, and water on many holes, with Manly Lagoon directly behind the 5th green.
- 2nd: a 505-metre par 5 with water across the fairway and a Peter Thomson pot bunker short of a raised green.
- 3rd: a 461-metre par 5, the first of three holes with two water carries.
- 7th: a 143-metre par 3 with no bunkers, defended by a difficult green.
Manly is a private club. Visitors normally play as guests invited by a member. Golfers from interstate or overseas may be introduced by the General Manager if they are current members of a recognised club and bring a letter of introduction from it; enquiries go through the visitor golf enquiry form on the club's website. Smart attire is required on the course, and shorts and golf shoes are not allowed in the dining room.
The golf shop hires Mizuno club sets and repairs clubs, and PGA professionals give lessons seven days a week. The club also has practice facilities, a cafe and dining room open seven days, a snooker room and a bowling green.
