About the course

Lord Howe Island Golf Club is on Lagoon Road on Lord Howe Island, less than two hours' flight from Sydney or Brisbane. The course began on a market garden in 1969 and has since been developed and expanded. The club employs a full-time greenkeeper, backed by volunteer labour.

It is a nine-hole course of five par 3s and four par 4s, played twice for an 18-hole round, which the club says takes about three hours. The layout starts in the shadow of Mt Lidgbird and Mt Gower, runs through Kentia palm forest, then opens out onto gently undulating fairways along the ocean foreshore.

Visitors do not need to book for social golf, but club competitions are played on Friday and Sunday afternoons, so plan around those. The hire room is unattended and runs on an honesty system: $70 covers hire clubs and a pull buggy, and a weekly membership is $120, both paid at the self-service card terminal in the hire room. A vending machine there sells balls, tees, drinks and snacks. Club membership is open to anyone, and there is a $150 overseas membership for mainland players.

The new clubhouse has a verandah with views of the mountains and the ocean. The Golfy restaurant and bar opens on Fridays and Sundays from 2pm, and the club hosts weddings and functions with undercover seating for more than 100.
