About the course

Maclean Golf Club is on Golf Links Road at Ilarwill, on Woodford Island in the Clarence River, about 4 km from the Maclean town centre. The club describes the island as Australia's largest inland island. Years of volunteer work by members took the course to a full 18 holes.

The par 72 course measures about 5,880 metres from the members' tees and plays through stands of native trees, with dams, creeks and gullies on many holes and out of bounds down the left of several.

9th: the Thistle Hole, a 318-metre par 4 aimed at the clubhouse, where golfers can pay the starter a dollar for a nearest-the-pin prize on their second shot.
12th: a 375-metre par 4 and index 1, uphill all the way to a large, contoured green with a bunker across most of the front.
16th: a 361-metre par 4 to a green almost on an island, with a creek in front and ponds left and behind.
17th: a 137-metre par 3 over water to a raised green, where the club's record score for the hole stands at 23.

Visitors are welcome in most competitions. Veterans play an 18-hole medley on Monday with an 8.30am shotgun start, and the nine-hole Bravehearts medley runs on Tuesday from 9am. Wednesday has women's, men's stableford and men's nine-hole skins events, and Thursday and Saturday competitions run from 7am to 1pm. Visitors with a Golflink handicap book through the pro shop on 02 6645 2183, and non-members can request a social round through the club's contact page. The Maclean Open is played over 36 holes in October.

The clubhouse opens daily from 7.30am and has a bar. The pro shop has a resident professional for lessons and club repairs, hire clubs, pull buggies and a fleet of electric carts that can be booked by phone. The club has a practice range and two practice greens, one with a chipping area.
