About the course
Wakehurst Golf Club is at Seaforth on Sydney's Northern Beaches, in bushland within War Memorial Park, with views over Manly Dam. The idea for the club dates from 1960, when the future of Balgowlah Golf Club looked uncertain; a lease was signed in 1969 and the course was opened by Sir Robert and Lady Askin early in 1972. The early years brought financial strain, boundary disputes and opposition from environmental groups, until a 1984 contract allowing waste disposal on the site helped pay for redevelopment of the course and put the club on a firmer footing.
The par 72 course measures about 6,130 metres from the black tees, with gold, silver and orange tees for shorter rounds. It is a hilly bushland layout with elevated tees, tree-lined fairways, out of bounds on many holes and several two-tiered greens.
- 3rd: a 355-metre par 4 with views to Manly Beach from the back tees and water in front of the green.
- 8th: the longest hole, a 528-metre par 5 that bends left past mounds to a narrowing approach.
- 16th: a 198-metre par 3 played over a large water hazard.
The course is open to the public seven days a week, with all public tee times booked and paid for online after registering. Nine-hole rounds are available early in the morning, and 18-hole times from mid-morning or early afternoon depending on the day. Green fees are $72 for 18 holes and $42 for nine on weekdays, and $77 and $47 on weekends and public holidays, with weekday concession rates. Motorised carts are $55 for 18 holes, booked through the pro shop, and club sets and pull buggies can be hired. The dress code allows jeans and cargo shorts but not sandals or gym wear.
The pro shop's PGA professionals offer lessons, clinics and club fitting with a GC Quad simulator. The clubhouse is open to everyone, with a cafe open daily, a bar with a verandah overlooking the 18th green, and dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.
