About the course
Oberon Golf Club is beside Lake Oberon in the Central Tablelands, about 179 kilometres and two and a half hours' drive west of Sydney via the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves Road. The club opened in 1958 with nine holes and sand greens, grew to 12 holes, and reached 18 holes by 1972. The course is the work of architect Al Howard.
The course measures 5582 metres for men, at par 70, and 5209 metres for women, at par 72. It winds through tall stands of gums on hilly ground, with small, sloping greens and tight fairways, and has no bunkers. At more than 1000 metres above sea level it is a cool-climate course that can get a light dusting of snow in winter, and kangaroos are common.
- 2nd: a 361-metre par 4 with the first view of the lake, dropping about 60 metres from tee to green.
- 5th: the only par 5 on the front nine, 455 metres, usually into the prevailing westerly with the lake along the left when it is full.
- 14th: a 364-metre par 4 rated the hardest hole, where only half the fairway gives a view of the green.
Visitors are welcome and the course is open seven days. Bookings can be made by phone, email or online, and when the clubhouse is unattended scorecards are left by the front door and green fees are paid by card at a vending machine. Saturday competitions are open to visitors with a Golf Australia handicap, a relaxed 12-hole competition runs on Thursdays, and women play on Wednesdays.
The renovated clubhouse has a bar and a Thai restaurant, open for dinner from Wednesday and for lunch from Thursday to Sunday, and the club hosts weddings and functions.
