About the course
St Michael's Golf Club is on the coast at Little Bay, about 13 km south of the Sydney CBD. It grew out of the Niblick Club, a social group of Catholic golfers formed in December 1932 with the support of Monsignor James Meany. Land between Prince Henry Hospital and NSW Golf Club was secured in 1937, the name came from landholder Michael Moran, and the layout was pegged out through dense scrub with professional Will Corry. Nine holes opened on 5 June 1938 and the full 18 in 1939. The army took over the course from 1942 to 1946, and a new clubhouse opened in 1963.
The course is a links-style layout over coastal hills, native bush and scrub, with ocean views from many tees and wind shaping how holes play.
- 5th: a par 3 with a 140-metre carry over sand to a sloping green.
- 6th and 7th: back-to-back par 5s running in opposite directions, so the wind decides which is harder.
- 16th: an elevated tee shot across Moran's Gully, with a 170-metre carry on the direct line.
Visitors can play social golf seven days a week at set times that vary by day and season. Tee sheets open eight days ahead at 4pm, and bookings go through the golf shop on (02) 9326 8000. A handicap is not needed for social play, while visitors with a Golf Australia handicap can enter the Thursday open competition. Green fees are not published online. Carts and clubs can be hired, and a dress code applies.
Practice facilities include indoor and outdoor nets, three putting greens, a short-game area and Cullen's Driving Range, a public grass range open Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 3pm. PGA professionals coach, the pro shop handles fitting and repairs, and the bistro is open daily from 10am to 3pm to members, guests and green-fee players.
