About the course
Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club is at Colebee in western Sydney, handy to the M7, M2 and M4 and roughly 45 minutes from the CBD. The club traces its story to 1927, when the St Andrews course near Blacktown was built after Parramatta Golf Club closed. That course was taken over by the RAAF during World War II, then bought in 1947 by a group of Freemasons who formed Ashlar Golf Club, opening the full 18 holes in June 1948. Ashlar closed in August 2012 and moved along Richmond Road to a new Greg Norman designed course under the Stonecutters Ridge name, which recalls the Aboriginal stone tool making once carried out on the ridge. The course hosted the NSW Open in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
The par 71 layout measures 6,248 metres (slope 134) and follows Eastern Creek through bushland, with deep bunkers, contoured greens, water and native grasses in play.
- 1st: a 520-metre par 5 from the blue tees, the only par 5 on the front nine, with a hazard down the whole left side.
- 6th: the only par 3 going out, 176 metres, with water along the left for the full length of the hole.
- 18th: a 415-metre par 4 with a drive over native grass, often into the prevailing wind, to a green that rises from front to back.
Social golfers are welcome, with tee times outside member competitions shown in the online booking calendar, which also lists weekend nine-hole times. Open competitions run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, and Saturdays are for members only. Everyone checks in at the pro shop before teeing off.
The club has a practice range, putting greens and nets. The pro shop offers PGA coaching, club repairs and hire of clubs, pull and electric buggies and a fleet of 72 electric carts. The clubhouse has Stonies (steak, pizza and pasta) for lunch daily and dinner Wednesday to Sunday, Cafe Ridge, a sports bar overlooking the 18th, and tennis courts.
