About the course

Tallwoods Country Club is at Hallidays Point near the Great Lakes on the Mid North Coast, about three and a half hours' drive north of Sydney. Its 18-hole championship course was designed by Dr Michael Hurdzan, and the club says it is the only Hurdzan course in Australia. The 14th hole is named after Guy Quattrocchi, whom the club credits as a designer and whose favourite hole it was.

The course is laid over rugged, undulating ground with big changes in elevation. Tall eucalypts such as tallowwood, blackbutt and ironbark line the fairways, there is plenty of water, and several greens sit in small amphitheatres cut into the hillside below the homesites. From some of the higher points you can see over the treetops to the ocean. It plays to par 72, with five par 3s, eight par 4s and five par 5s, and every hole has a name.

3rd: The Quarry, a 437-metre par 5 played uphill into the prevailing wind.
6th: Purgatory, a par 3 of 180 metres from the black tees.
11th: The Sentinels, a par 3 across the lake, with a forward tee for those who would rather not carry the water.
15th: The Rogue, a 534-metre par 5 with a raised green 50 metres long set at an angle to the approach.
18th: Hell or Glory, a reachable par 5 guarded by bunkers and water.

Social players are welcome. Rounds are booked by phone with the pro shop, open seven days from 7am to dusk, where golf professional Jeff Mendham handles bookings and promotions. Social fees are $60 for 18 holes and $50 for nine, or $80 and $60 with a shared cart. Dress regulations are published on the club website.

The pro shop sells merchandise and the club runs kids' clinics and corporate golf days. The Bunker Bar serves breakfast from Friday to Sunday, lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, with an alfresco area overlooking the course. The club also has 15 bungalows for accommodation.
