About the course
The Royal Sydney Golf Club is a private golf, sporting and social club at Rose Bay in Sydney's eastern suburbs, with about 6,000 members. Its early clubhouses stood nearby, and in 1897 the club was granted the "Royal" prefix. The present clubhouse site has been in use since 1904; after a fire in 1920 the current building opened in July 1922.
The club has two courses. The 18-hole Championship Course kept a layout first devised for the 1922 Australian Open for 101 years, and has hosted 15 men's Australian Opens and one women's Open. Between late 2023 and March 2025 it was rebuilt by course architect Gil Hanse with landscape architect Harley Kruse, introducing a two-loops-of-nine routing, ribbon-style tees, 108 bunkers and new green and irrigation construction. Five sets of tees run from 4,785 to 6,309 metres. The project also added 1,592 trees and 500,000 native plants. The course reopened in April 2025, and access has been phased in since, with the course closed on Mondays during the phases.
The nine-hole Centenary Course was rebuilt in 1997 to a design by Thomson Wolveridge Perrett and caters particularly for beginners and older players, with tight fairways, small contoured greens and water on six holes.
Royal Sydney is not open to the public and publishes no visitor green fees. Members can bring up to three guests onto the Centenary Course during social play times, at $60 a guest, and each guest may play there up to 12 times a year. The reopening plan allows limited guest access to the Championship Course, and access for members of some reciprocal clubs, from its third phase.
The clubhouse has bars, restaurants, function rooms and accommodation, and the club also offers tennis, squash, croquet, bowls, pickleball and a fitness centre with a 25-metre pool.
