About the course
Tumut Golf Club sits in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, about 25 minutes off the Hume Highway and roughly halfway between Sydney and Melbourne. Golf in the town began in 1925 on links at the racecourse, then moved in 1932 to private land at Stoney Creek. After the State Forestry Commission released land in 1938, the club settled on its current site in 1940 with a nine-hole sand greens course designed by Prospero Ellis. A second nine followed, the greens were converted to grass, and a grey water irrigation system was later installed. The clubhouse began as a small forestry cottage.
The 18 holes play to par 71 from the men's tees and par 74 from the women's, measuring 5,753 metres from the blue tees. The course is not long, but narrow fairways and small, raised greens make it demanding. Eastern grey kangaroos are common on the course.
- 2nd: a 509-metre par 5 from the blue tees.
- 17th: the shortest hole, a 131-metre par 3.
The course is open seven days a week to visitors. Green fees are $35 for 18 holes and $25 for nine, and non-members can hire a cart for $45 for 18 holes or $30 for nine. Tee times are booked by phoning the pro shop. Competitions run on Tuesday (ladies and veterans), Thursday (midweek 18 holes and a nine-hole chook run), and Saturday and Sunday, with the monthly medal on the first Saturday.
The pro shop is run by a PGA professional and hires clubs and motorised carts. The clubhouse has dining, a bar and gaming, with a restaurant open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner, and a courtesy bus on Friday and Saturday evenings. The club also has a footgolf course.
