About the course

Alyangula Golf Club is on Alebuwa Road in the centre of Alyangula, the township on the north-west coast of Groote Eylandt, and its course runs along the Milner Bay foreshore. Alyangula was established in the late 1960s by the Groote Eylandt Mining Company to house mine workers. The island is about 630 kilometres east of Darwin, around 1.5 hours by air, and visitors need a permit from the Anindilyakwa Land Council.

The course has nine holes with 18 separate tee blocks and plays to par 65 (ACR 62). It is a short, tree-lined layout where placement matters more than distance:

  • 1st/10th: a par 3 of 142 to 155 metres with trees on the left.
  • 2nd/11th: a par 4 of 185 to 235 metres that doglegs left over water.
  • 3rd/12th: the signature hole, a par 3 of 140 to 150 metres.
  • 7th/16th: the longest hole, 330 to 423 metres, with out of bounds left, hazards right and a sloping, elevated green.
  • 9th/18th: a par 3 of 177 to 192 metres with out of bounds on the left and a two-tiered green.

The club's membership page lists a single nine-hole round at $10. Contact the club on (08) 8987 6060 or info@alyangulagc.com.au to arrange a game.

The clubhouse, known as the Golfie, has a licensed bar, a bistro and dining room with air-conditioned and covered outdoor seating, a pro shop for apparel and accessories, practice nets and a practice green, and a children's playground. The kitchen (08 8987 6655) serves lunch from noon to 2pm Tuesday to Sunday and dinner from 5.30pm to 8pm daily, with takeaway available.
