About the course
Katherine Golf Club is part of the Katherine Country Club at 40 Pearce Street, Katherine. Golf in the town goes back to the early 1960s, when locals laid out a few sand-green holes around the race track, and many Katherine golfers also played a five-hole RAAF layout at Tindal. When the Tindal course closed at the end of 1969, members cleared their own nine holes with volunteer labour and moved the Tindal clubhouse to the new site. The club began playing under South Australian Golf Association rules in 1971, extended to 18 holes after a land swap with the Show Society in 1973, and opened a new clubhouse on 17 June 1976.
The current course has nine holes with two distinct tee blocks on each, many playing from different lengths and angles, giving an 18-hole par 72. It is relatively short, with tree-lined fairways and tight landing areas, and rewards accuracy over power. The par 3s designed by Graham Marsh bring water and greenside bunkers into play, and recent work has added newly designed holes and upgraded greens.
Visitors are welcome. Non-members pay $30 for 18 holes and $20 for nine. Clubs and carts can be hired, and booking ahead is recommended in the dry season. Book through the pro shop on (08) 8971 3009 or proshop@katherinecountryclub.com.au. Golf attire is expected.
The Country Club, known locally as the Golfie, has a bistro, bar, beer garden, gaming room, an eight-rink synthetic lawn bowls green and an undercover children's play area, with live music on an outdoor stage in the dry season. It opens from 10am daily, and a courtesy bus runs on Friday and Saturday nights (phone 08 8972 1276 to book).
