About the course
The Humpty Doo and Rural Area Golf Club is at 565 Pioneer Drive, Humpty Doo, about 30 minutes' drive from Darwin. From the Stuart Highway, turn into Girraween Road at the Coolalinga lights, continue along Anglesey Road and turn into Pioneer Drive; the entrance is marked by a big tee. The club began in November 1984 with a four-hole sand-green course on a local five-acre block. It acquired the Pioneer Drive land in 1985, volunteers cleared the bush from 1987, and the first competition on the new site was the June 1987 monthly medal.
Today's course has nine holes with grass greens and two tee positions on each, played as an 18-hole par 72. The club's golf page gives 6,025 metres from the men's tees (ACR 71, slope 121) and 5,265 metres for women (slope 119). The fairways are wide and flat, so walking is easy, but water hazards, bunkers and even trees in the middle of fairways add interest.
Visitors and green fee players are welcome except during club competitions, and the course is closed to them until 2.30pm on Sundays, when members play 18-hole competitions. Visitors with a Golf Australia handicap can enter the weekly competitions, nine-hole Stablefords run on Wednesdays and Fridays, and players without handicaps can join Ambrose days, usually on public holidays. The club also holds two 36-hole opens each year, including the Humpty Doo Open. Phone (08) 8988 1118 to check available times. Clubs, push buggies and motorised carts can be hired. Dress must be neat, with enclosed shoes and no thongs.
Facilities include a driving range, a practice putting green with a bunker, a small golf shop opening from 7am on weekdays and 6.30am at weekends, two bars open from 10am daily, gaming and a playground. The Rusty Putter Bistro serves dinner daily from 5pm to 8.30pm and lunch Friday to Sunday.
