About the course
Birdsville Dunes Golf Club sits beside the Birdsville Simpson Desert National Park Road on the edge of the Simpson Desert, and Outback Queensland Tourism describes it as one of the most remote courses in Australia. It was a host venue for the Outback Queensland Masters in 2022 and again in 2024, the Golf Australia series that toured outback clubs from 2019 to 2025.
The course is a par 72 laid out on red sand, with fairways running among the dunes and oiled sand greens in place of grass. Desert winds can be unpredictable, and the regional tourism body notes that local birds have a habit of making off with golf balls. Emus and wildflowers are part of the scenery.
The club runs open competitions and local events, and its tourism listing notes a bar and food and refreshments. Green fees and playing arrangements are not published online, so check them by phone on 0419 862 775 before making the trip. The Birdsville Hotel is in town for a meal or a drink afterwards.
