About the course

Emerald Golf Club dates from 1928, when a handful of locals started playing on a patch of ground at the edge of town. Volunteers cut the first course out of the bush with sand greens, and it has since grown from nine holes to 18 and changed to grass greens. Members kept the course going through the war years by doing the greenkeeping themselves. The club is community owned and volunteer run, has more than 500 members, and is preparing for its centenary in 2028. It sits beside the Nogoa River on the corner of Theresa and Opal Streets.

The 18-hole course is par 70 from every set of tees: 5,779 metres from the blue tees, used for most weekend competitions, 5,492 metres from the white and 5,106 metres from the red. Fairways are tree-lined, water hazards and a creek come into play, and the greens are demanding, so accuracy counts for more than length. Since 2020 a drought-proofing project with the Central Highlands Regional Council has kept the fairways watered with recycled water. Kangaroos roam the course.

Visitors are welcome every day, and the course is open from 6am to 6pm. Tee times are booked online through MiClub, and players check in at the pro shop before starting. Weekend competitions usually run from 7am to 12.30pm. Visitor green fees are not published online. Buggies and club sets can be hired from the pro shop, which is open 7am to 5pm daily.

The pro shop also sells equipment and takes bookings for an indoor golf simulator. The bistro and bar, run by Cheeky Gecko, opens seven days and caters for private functions. Club events through the year include the BUSHkids Golf Day and the Col Gill Memorial Shield.
