About the course
Kooyonga Golf Club sits on May Terrace at Lockleys, about 15 minutes from the Adelaide CBD and five minutes from the airport. Its founder, H.L. "Cargie" Rymill, came across the site in 1922 when a train strike sent him to Henley Beach by tram and he saw a sale sign on May's Paddock, a stretch of swamp and sand dunes. The club opened on 9 May 1923, and its first professional, Rufus Stewart, won the 1927 Australian Open.
Rymill designed the course himself, and his routing has changed little since; Crafter + Mogford have carried out work in recent years. The par 72 layout runs over undulating sand hills, measuring 6337 metres from the championship tees and 6012 metres from the whites, with Santa Ana couch tees and fairways, bent greens and rough of native couch and fescue. Kooyonga has hosted five men's and two women's Australian Opens, most recently the women's event in 2026, along with nine South Australian Opens and eight national amateur championships.
- 3rd: a 179-metre par 3 to a pear-shaped green, played across a prevailing westerly from the left.
- 5th: a 297-metre par 4 that long hitters can try to drive, with a two-tiered green.
- 15th: a 205-metre par 3 with run-offs on every side of the green.
- 17th: a 353-metre par 4 to a green at the foot of a sand hill, with water front right.
Kooyonga is a private club. Visitors with a GOLFLink number can play subject to availability by submitting a golf booking enquiry; reciprocal club members attach a letter of introduction. From 1 January 2026 the green fee is $425 for local and interstate visitors and $625 for international visitors. Motorised carts are $60 and hire sets $50 or $100. The club is cashless, and denim and tracksuits are not allowed anywhere on the property.
The golf academy offers PGA coaching, a simulator, clinics and club fitting, and the clubhouse has dining areas and terraces looking over the course.
