About the course
Lake Albert Golf Club is on the southern side of Meningie, just past the hospital, about 150 kilometres from Adelaide by the South Eastern Freeway and Princes Highway. The club was formed in 1968 with a nine-hole course of black sand scrapes. In 1979 members decided to build 18 holes, designed by locals Bow Jude and Dave Cleland, and the new layout was first played in 1981. Members laid irrigation across the course in 1986, and grass greens followed in stages: the 12th and 18th in 1987, seven more in 1988 and the last six, first played in 1992.
The course is par 72, with fairways and greens watered all year and thousands of trees lining the holes. The first tee looks over Lake Albert. It is walkable for most players, though a few parts are hilly. The club has around 65 members and the course is kept up by volunteers, who maintain about 500 sprinklers and continue to extend the cart paths.
There is no pro shop and the clubhouse opens only at set times, so visiting is informal. The green fee is $30 per person for the day, however many holes you play, and juniors under 16 pay $5. Information is posted in the clubhouse window and fees are paid by honour system. Motorised carts are available from $40 a day, cash only, a driver's licence is required, and they must be booked in advance by phone or email.
The air-conditioned, licensed clubhouse seats about 130 and overlooks the lake and the 18th. It opens to the public for meals on Friday nights, and catering can be arranged for golf groups. A rotunda with a barbecue sits mid-course near the 6th and 9th. Self-contained vehicles can stay at the club's RV area for $10 a night, up to seven nights, with no facilities.
