About the course

Barnbougle Dunes opened in December 2004 on a coastal strip of a potato farm on Tasmania's north-east coast, near Bridport and about an hour's drive from Launceston. Tom Doak and Mike Clayton designed it to follow the traditional links of Scotland and Ireland. It is the older of Barnbougle's two 18-hole courses, with Lost Farm across the river.

The course is a blend of fescue and bent grasses, and its fairways are wider than most golfers will be used to. The best lines into the flags come from the corners of the fairways and shift with the wind and the pin. The front nine runs through saddles in the dunes, while the back nine is more open, with views over the bay and Bridport. The greens are quick, with broad slopes and ridges that follow the dunes.

  • 1st: a 506-metre par 5.
  • 4th: a 271-metre par 4 with a bunker the club describes as the largest in the southern hemisphere.
  • 7th: a 112-metre par 3.
  • 12th: the other short par 4, under 275 metres from the back tee.

Barnbougle is open to the public. For the high season from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027 the Australian green fee, which applies to both The Dunes and Lost Farm, is $199 for 18 holes, with all-day golf $300 on one course and $320 across both; the international 18-hole rate is $285. The 14-hole Bougle Run short course, a Bill Coore design of 12 par 3s and two par 4s in the dunes between Lost Farm's two nines, is $110. Barnbougle is a walking venue: motorised carts are only provided, driven by a caddie, for golfers with a medical certificate. Caddies and hire clubs are available.

Practice facilities at The Dunes include a driving range and chipping and putting areas, with range balls from $6 a bucket. PGA professionals give lessons from $50 for 30 minutes, as well as playing lessons and links-specific clinics. The Dunes Clubhouse looks over the beach and is open seven days for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with the bar open until late. Accommodation is on site.
