About the course
Mowbray Golf Club is at 28 Grubb Street in Mowbray, in Launceston's northern suburbs. It began in 1934 as a nine-hole course, when the Riverside club moved to its West Tamar site and half its members stayed behind at Mowbray to form a new club. The course grew to 18 holes in the 1960s. The current clubhouse opened in 1975 and was renovated in 2018. The club's Division 1 pennant team won nine consecutive northern and state pennants from 1996 to 2004, and in 1999 Mowbray won all four state pennant divisions.
The 18-hole layout measures more than 6000 metres and has two par 5s, three par 3s and 13 par 4s, a par of 71. The club has over 500 members and runs competitions six days a week.
The course is open to the public. The club recommends booking a tee time in advance and checking whether a competition is on; bookings go through the pro shop on (03) 6326 3832. Green fees are $55 for 18 holes and $35 for nine, members' guests and students pay $35 and $25, and competition guests pay $35 plus the competition fee. Two-seater motorised carts cost $45, pull buggies $5, a premium club set $40 and standard club hire $20 for 18 holes. Fees are paid at the pro shop or the bar, and players are asked to wear a neat shirt and golf-suitable shoes.
Club professional Sam Rawlings runs the pro shop, open daily from 8.30am (9am on Fridays) to 5pm, which offers TrackMan club fitting, club building and repairs, and lessons for members and visitors. Alongside the course there are two practice ranges and an indoor facility. The public bar overlooks the course and has a wood fire and pool table; it opens Wednesday to Friday from noon to 7pm, Saturday from 9am to 7pm and Sunday from noon to 4.30pm, and is closed Monday and Tuesday. The club also hosts functions and events.
