About the course
Kingston Beach Golf Club occupies the hillside above Kingston Beach, about 15 minutes from Hobart, looking across the D'Entrecasteaux Channel to Bruny Island. Golf in Kingston began in 1910 on links above the cliffs at the southern end of the beach. After the First World War Robert Nettlefold revived the game and in 1920 bought land along Browns River, and the club was established in November 1922. Nettlefold and John Irving laid out the first nine holes, which opened in January 1923; the course reached 12 holes in 1924 and 18 by 1926. Professional Jock Robertson, winner of the 1930 Australian Professional Championship, designed the bunkering, and Robert's son Len Nettlefold won two Australian Amateur titles.
The par 71 course measures 5,836 metres from the blue tees (rating 71.0, slope 127), with red tees at 5,131 metres. Hillside holes with Channel views give way to flatter ground beside Browns River.
- 1st: a 162-metre par 3 played downhill from a tee high above the beach.
- 13th: the hardest hole, a 421-metre par 4 with Browns River right and behind the green and a pond short left.
- 18th: after the 17th green, a cliffside inclinator (funicular railway) carries players up to the tee of this 127-metre downhill par 3.
Visitors are welcome every day, subject to competitions. Green fees are $100 for 18 holes and $70 for nine, with lower rates for Tasmanian residents ($80 and $55) and for guests of members ($55 and $45). Carts cost $55 for 18 holes and $40 for nine. Book online, through the pro shop on (03) 6229 4298 or by email. Social play needs no handicap, but competition entry does. The main competition is on Saturday, with mixed play on Wednesday and women's mornings on Tuesday and Thursday. Smart casual golf wear applies, with no singlets or steel spikes.
The clubhouse bar and bistro overlooks the Channel and is open to visitors from Tuesday to Saturday, plus Sunday afternoons in summer, with happy hour from 2pm to 4pm.
