About the course
Royal Hobart Golf Club is a members' club at Seven Mile Beach, about 20 minutes from Hobart and five minutes from Hobart Airport. Its roots go back to the Newlands Golf Club of 1896 and the club that moved to Sandy Bay in 1900 and took the name Hobart Golf Club in 1902. The club opened a new course at Rosny on the Eastern Shore in 1916, received its Royal Charter in 1925, and in 1956 agreed to move to 70 hectares at Seven Mile Beach. The clubhouse opened in 1963 and was refurbished after 2014.
Vern Morcom designed the course on sandy soil in natural bushland, using the sand base for more than 80 fairway and greenside bunkers; a 1997 master plan guides later changes. The men's card is par 72 and about 6,104 metres. The club has hosted the Tasmanian Open, the Australian Amateur and the Australian Women's Amateur, and is the only Tasmanian course to have staged the Australian Open, won by Jack Nicklaus in 1971.
- 1st: a 402-metre par 4 and the men's stroke index 1, with bunkers either side of the landing area.
- 11th: a 127-metre par 3 ringed by bunkers, much harder when the wind is up.
- 13th: a 512-metre par 5 with water left and scrub right.
- 15th: a 200-metre par 3 to a green sloping back to front.
Visitor green fees are $90 for 18 holes and $50 for nine for Tasmanian residents, $150 and $80 for interstate visitors, and $180 and $100 for international visitors. Bookings are made through the pro shop on (03) 6248 6108 or by email. Clubs, motorised carts and pull buggies can be hired, PGA professionals give lessons, and range balls are available. The pro shop is open seven days.
The upstairs bar and restaurant is open to the public for lunch every day, with monthly dining nights. Smart casual dress applies in the clubhouse.
