About the course

North West Bay Golf Club is on the Channel Highway at Margate, between Kingston and Margate south of Hobart, and describes itself as Australia's southernmost regulation 18-hole course. A nine-hole public course designed by A. Toogood and built by D. R. Hazell opened in 1965. The club formed around it, was granted affiliation with the Southern Tasmanian Golf Union in 1969 as North West Bay Country Golf Club, and added a second nine from 1969 to 1970. Three new holes replaced old ones in 1979, and in 1980 the club bought the course from the Housing Department for $95,000. A redevelopment plan by Peter Toogood followed, and the revamped course was officially opened in November 1990, lengthening it from 5,282 to 6,108 metres.

Today the course measures 5,927 metres from the blue tees (slope 130), 5,663 from the white, 5,293 from the red and 4,973 from the yellow. The hilly ground gives uphill, downhill and sidehill lies, and treated wastewater irrigates the fairways.

  • 11th: a par 4 with a view across North West Bay and a downhill second shot.
  • 12th: the hardest hole, a par 4 with a green that is difficult to hold.
  • 18th: a short uphill par 5 with a large dam on the left and out of bounds left and behind the green.

Visitors from other clubs and the general public are welcome. The club lists green fees of $70 for 18 holes and $50 for nine but notes that rates usually rise on 1 October, so confirm by phone. Visitors with a GolfLink handicap can enter the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday competitions, and the Thursday afternoon nine-hole chicken run from October to March is open to all. Electric carts cost $45 for 18 holes and $30 for nine, and clubs and buggies can be hired. Neat casual wear is fine, but not football tops or singlets.

The cafe and shop sells snacks, drinks and golf gear, with hot food on competition days, and the bar opens on competition and visitor days.
