About the course

Launceston Golf Club is on Opossum Road, Kings Meadows, about 10 minutes from both the Launceston CBD and the airport. The club was formed in 1899 as the Mowbray Golf Club, with links laid out inside the Mowbray racecourse. It became the Tasmanian Golf Club in 1900, bought its present site later that year and opened the course on 13 April 1901, adopting the Launceston name in 1908. The club describes the course as the oldest 18-hole layout in Tasmania, and it was the state's only 18-hole course until 1921. It has staged the Tasmanian Open on several occasions and hosted the Australian Junior Championships in 1988.

The course is a par 72 of 5808 metres. A rivulet runs beside the 10th, ditches line several fairways, and dams come into play around the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th. From the blue tees:

  • 1st: a short opener, a 239-metre par 4.
  • 2nd: a 526-metre par 5 and the stroke index 1 hole.
  • 10th: a 506-metre par 5 to start the back nine.
  • 14th: a 178-metre par 3, the longest of the three short holes.

Launceston is a private members' club that welcomes visitors holding a GolfLink number and a current handicap, either individually or in groups. Visitor green fees are $90 for 18 holes and $60 for nine, with a Tasmanian resident rate of $70 and $50. Juniors pay $20 for 18 holes, and juniors aged 13 to 17 pay $15 for nine. Tee times are arranged through the pro shop on (03) 6344 1118. On the course, shirts need collars, shorts must be tailored, golf shoes are required, and denim, tracksuits and collarless T-shirts are not allowed.

The pro shop sells equipment and apparel and handles repairs, and PGA professional Harley Williams gives lessons from $55 for 30 minutes. The club has an extensive set of practice facilities and a Spike Bar, where relaxed dress rules apply on weekdays between 3pm and 7pm, and it hosts weddings, business functions and corporate golf days.
