About the course

Riverside Golf Club is on the West Tamar Road beside the Tamar River, about 4 km north of the Launceston CBD, on 110 acres of parkland surrounded by housing. The club formed in August 1930 at Hobblers Bridge beside the North Esk River, which gave it its name, moved behind the Mowbray racecourse in 1932, and took a lease on the present site in 1934, when half the members stayed behind and later formed the Mowbray Golf Club. A nine-hole course opened on 27 April 1935 and the 18-hole course on 29 May 1948. The course hosted the Tasmanian Open in 1985.

The course is a par 72 of 5984 metres, with fairways lined by eucalypts, blackwoods and pines and a prevailing breeze that affects many holes.

  • 3rd: a 390-metre par 4, stroke index 1, usually helped by the breeze.
  • 7th: a 331-metre par 4 with water in front of and left of the green.
  • 15th: the longest hole, a 524-metre par 5 with out of bounds right and a creek to cross on the second shot.
  • 18th: a 496-metre double-dogleg par 5 to an elevated green.

The course is open to the public and no membership is needed. The club suggests booking a tee time on its online public bookings page or by phone, and checking the competition schedule. Green fees (as of July 2026) are $55 for 18 holes and $35 for nine, or $45 and $30 for members of Tasmanian clubs, and juniors pay half. Visitor carts are $55 for 18 holes and $35 for nine. Dress is neat casual golf wear with suitable shoes; thongs, singlets, T-shirts and ripped denim are not allowed, and each player needs their own clubs.

PGA professional Ty Ebdon runs the pro shop, offering lessons, nine-hole playing lessons, beginner clinics, equipment and coffee, and the club has practice areas and croquet. The Panorama Bar overlooks the course and the Tamar Valley and is open to the public without signing in, and the Friday bistro serves dinner from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, with bookings essential.
