About the course

Llanherne Golf Club lies between Hobart Airport and the beachside town of Seven Mile Beach, north-east of Hobart, with entry from the airport terminal end of Grueber Avenue. The club began on land inside the airport boundary, started by airport staff and locals under a Commonwealth lease. When airport expansion plans cut that lease to short term in the late 1980s, the club bought its present site from the State Government after a nearby pine plantation was harvested, and built the course and clubhouse with loans, member contributions and volunteer labour. The new course opened in March 1994.

Peter Toogood designed the links-style layout on the local sand belt: nine large greens served by 18 tees, gently rolling fairways, two lakes and plenty of bunkers. Over 18 holes it is par 72 and 5,978 metres, with slope ratings of 124 from the white tees, 120 from the yellow social tees and 118 from the red tees. Markers on the sides of the fairways show 150 metres to the centre of the green.

Visitors with handicaps are welcome. Competitions run six days a week:

  • Tuesday: women's 18 holes.
  • Wednesday, Friday and Sunday: nine-hole competitions.
  • Thursday and Saturday: 18-hole competitions.

Visitors can play social or competition golf on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday with a booking, made online or by phone. On Monday no booking is needed, but report to the clubhouse and pay first. The visitors page lists a green fee of $35 for visiting members. Two motorised carts can be hired for $50 each, and a few buggies and sets of clubs are available on request. Neat golf attire is expected; T-shirts, tracksuits and football shorts are not allowed.

The clubhouse bar opens on competition days, usually from 9am or 10am, with later Wednesday and Friday hours during daylight saving.

Green fees

Visiting members $40 (holes not stated); motorised cart $50; limited buggies and clubs on request; booking needed Wed, Thu, Fri and Sun; no booking on Monday, pay at the clubhouse first; eftpos only during clubhouse hours.
