About the course

Poatina Golf and Community Club is in Poatina, a town built in the late 1950s at the foot of the Western Tiers to house the workforce for the Great Lake power scheme and the Poatina Power Station, which was commissioned in 1966. Local volunteers built the golf course in 1969, and the Commissioner of the Hydro Electric Commission officially opened it in 1970. It soon became the social centre of the town, and the club is supported by the Tasmanian Government.

The course spreads across the plains below the Tiers and plays as 18 holes to nine greens, with the holes paired around shared greens (1 and 10, 2 and 11, and so on through 9 and 18). It is played as a par 73, and the club's website has drone footage of each pair of holes.

Competitions are held every Wednesday and Saturday, and guests are welcome at them. The calendar includes monthly medals, stableford and stroke and putting rounds, Ambrose events, foursomes and occasional shotgun starts, and the course closes on some days for greens coring and the annual sponsors' day, so check the fixture list before travelling. The club publishes a single green fee of $20, and Vendi golf carts are available for hire. Enquiries go to the club by email at poatinagc@gmail.com or by phone on 0419 776 000. The club welcomes new members, particularly juniors and women.
